new year
Happy new year! 2022 kind of blends into 2023 for me. Outside of life-changing events, years might continue blending into each other for the rest of my life. (I can no longer distinguish what happened during which year in high school, only that they happened.) So here’s a reflection on 2023 that might accidentally include some 2022, and some ideas going forward.
Some things, not necessarily accomplishments:
- started this blog (hello 2ish month mark!)
- not much to say about work
- October: First time someone enthusiastically said that I sang well and I didn’t get the impression that they were just being nice. This is a skill that I started as an adult. I’m not actively practicing it right now; it was one of my 2022 goals to “sing not horribly” and that’s good enough for me.
- wrote an excel macro for my mom’s work that she was manually replicating all the time. About a full Sunday’s work, will continue improving and optimizing.
- according to GoodReads, I read 22 books, a total of 6,935 pages. I don’t know how much manga or webtoon I read this year.
- maxed out my 401 including mega backdoor after-tax contributions, maxed out my IRA with traditional to Roth backdoor
- was on T for 3 months, then got annoyed about bloodwork and finding a primary care physician and calling insurance. Also my skin started getting rough patches from T. Also also I was scared about ending up as an ugly hairy woman instead of a man so I stopped. Didn’t tell family.
- helped mom with beginner Japanese and learned in the process
- 160 day streak in Duolingo, that I dropped in December in favor of Anki
- joined some group class at work and made a few acquaintances over a month
- went to some company-related social events and made some more acquaintances
- attended 2 cons and various other queer-adjacent events, met some people, a small amount of which are my friends now
- went on a few dates with different people. I thought they were fine but a person needs more than just a few interactions to really feel something. So I stopped.
- I spent about 3 summer months living in a different city, did various things on the weekends like hiking, kayaking, etc.
- maybe… one year is too much time to think about …. I forgor
I’m not sure I’ll have much to say in terms of concrete 2024 resolutions that I’ll definitely stick to, as I plan my life on a rolling basis. I constantly re-evaluate, which means I don’t have to wait for a new year to decide stuff for myself. But here’s what’s on my mind:
- finish LN 2k on Anki
- learn Chinese but I’m not concerned with the pace here
- build an exercise habit
- Think about getting back on T. Maaaybe talk with a gender therapist? At this point I don’t know. I think talking to a friend who’s knowledgeable of trans nuances would help and it kind of sucks that everything needs to be a therapy thing now if we don’t want to “be a burden” on others.
- finish an updated ref sheet, finish my 1.5-years-late art trade. Maybe I can schedule these for March.
- fully set up my NAS
- fix tax issues of recent years
Things I want to happen but aren’t a priority:
- Sleep early, wake early
- Learn to cook more dishes
- learn to sing some more
- get better at guitar and piano
- get better at drawing
- learn some animation software
- record myself doing a kpop dance lol
- read 12 books
- meditation / yoga habit
- add graphs to my google sheets budget
- house and belongings declutter
Things I want to happen but aren’t entirely in my control:
- clear skin
- get promoted
- SEXY GIRLFRIEND; alternatively, become closer to existing friends. just some company without feeling like a burden.
